Thanks to help here I managed to install win7 via older bootcamp software with no problem: The trick is to locate the correct driver file first and do the manual Windows driver update.Looks to me that my machine is too early to make the cut for bootcamp6 but I took the chance and upgraded to win10 anyway. This may work for other display drivers, I don't know.
